My installation is a commentary on the de-individualization found in educational systems present in China. While China’s education plays a significant role and influence on standardizing the identity of China’s youth, I feel there is a parallel with the United States, where an increasing number of charter schools are in favor of test-base education and militarized management, leaving a stigma on generations of young students. Collectivism training and mass cultures are at the core of political influencers. Through the repetition of individual form, my work presents the complexity of these politics of the masses present in both the Asian and the Occidental political structures, both supporting a greater whole hierarchy, leaving the individual with a general feeling of emptiness. My work stems from a personal experience growing up in China, where I have developed an ambivalent relationship between memorization and disconnection. This exhibition “Scholastic Trauma” attempts to reconcile a symbiotic relationship between the disciplined and the subliminal.
J-COLLABO choose winners every year in Annual Group Exhibition. This is an online EXPO by 2019 winner artists.

"Joy" is the theme that I chose for my artist in residence program at J-Collabo in Brooklyn. My art pieces present what each of us can do to find “Joy."
