DOU – the way of beauty
Three examples of beautiful Japanese traditions include shodou(Japanese calligraphy), kadou (flower arrangement), and sadou (tea ceremony). These attract people in different aesthetic ways, but one finds the same spirit of Dou. Dou is the way of living. It is the attitude of the pursuit of the essence of life, which is to concentrate on one’s works and enjoy the moment. This helps one’s mind to become tranquil, which is an important state of mind derived from Zen. It
is remarkable that this spirit can still be found in the polite and courteous character of Japanese people. How wonderful it is that we can enjoy fascinating aspects of these cultures through play as well as through the timeless works by masters.
